[The 2050 Board Members]

Chairperson: Mr. Katsuhide Kitatani


Born in 1931, Mr. Kitatani graduated from Tamagawa University, Tokyo in 1953 and from the Graduate School of St. Paul's University, Tokyo in 1955. He worked for the United Nations from 1962 to 1993, culminating in UNDP Resident Representative in Myanmar (1986-1990) and Assistant Secretary-General/Deputy Executive Director, UN Population Fund (1990-1993). Since his retirement from the United Nations in 1993 and till 2000, he served as Senior Advisor to UNDP.

In 1994, Mr. Kitatani established "2050" an organization designed to promote awareness among the Japanese public of such global issues as the environment, population, poverty and also dedicated to enhancing women's status in the developing countries through education and revenue producing activities.

Besides being Chairman of 2050, he was a member of the US/Japan Common Agenda Round Table till 2000. He is also President of the Foundation for Global Environment and Peace. He actively participates in international meetings and delivers speeches all over Japan and in other countries on global issues.

Vice Chairperson: Mr. Chuya Hashimoto

Mr. Hashimoto was born in Niigata prefecture in 1947. Originally involved in theatre, Mr. Hashimoto became familiar with macrobiotics through his research of Yoga and other holistic arts. Through his attraction to the philosophy of food as a holistic medicine, Mr. Hashimoto began researching and practicing macrobiotics over 20 years ago.

Mr. Hashimoto is the editor of the monthly publication The Macrobian, and a health and nutrition consultant, recognized for his speeches and scholarly essays. Once a year he travels to Australia where he does macrobiotic counseling. He has also been holding health seminars in his home, through which he has counseled over 2000 people. Presently, Mr. Hashimoto lives in the mountains of Fukushima Prefecture with his wife.

Board Member: Mr. Yoshimasa Hashigaya

Mr. Hashigaya's specialty  is Arts and Design Education (Typography, Visual Communication Design). His artwork has been awarded at both the Lahti Poster Biennale (Finland), and the Warsaw International Poster Biennale (Poland). He is presently a Professor at Okayama University.


Board Member: Ms. Kazuko Kano

After leaving the World Bank Ms. Kano went on to work for the United Nations Population Fund. While working with UNFPA she served the country representative for Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Laos and Myanmar. As the UNFPA representative in Myanmar, Ms. Kano was first to introduce population policy. Ms. Kano now serves as advisor to the Japan Bank for International Cooperation. She is also as a Lecturer at Yokohama University.


Board Member: Mrs. Akiko Kitatani

Mrs. Kitatani graduated from the Sacred Heart in Tokyo. Upon graduation, Mrs. Kitatani taught at the Sacred Heart and also worked at various firms. After her marriage to Kit Kitatani, she lived in Indonesia, Pakistan, New York and finally, Myanmar. She lived in New York with her family for 22 years.

In New York, Mrs. Kitatani worked for the International School of the United Nations for eight years. Aside from her work affiliation, she was a volunteer of the United Nation's Women's Guild. While in Myanmar, she was the chairperson to the U.N.'s Women's Association and actively supported such facilities as orphanages, schools for the blind, and villages for lepers. Since 1983 she has been a devout follower of macrobiotics, which cured her husband of his cancer.


Board Member: Mr. Toshiro Tao

Mr. Tao was born in Kagoshima prefecture in 1963. Mr. Tao began working as a freelance photographer in 1991, under the supervision of Mr. Masaharu Tsunoda. In 1992 he went to Chernobyl twice and entered within the thirty-mile "death-zone" radius of the accident.

Presently, Mr. Tao is organizing exhibitions of his pictures and giving lectures across Japan. He has recently embraced the theme of Asian women and children in his pictures. Mr. Tao is now living in Chiba prefecture.

Board Member: Ms. Machiko Yanagishita.

Received her M.A. from Georgetown University in the field of population studies. After specializing in research of populations studies. Ms. Yanagishita was employed by the Population Reference Bureau in Washington D.C. and in Japan. Between 2001 and 2005, she taught human studies and social sciences at Josai International University and currently she teaches at Nihon University.

Board Member: Mr. Masahiko Nishiuchi

Editor of the World Population Bulletin issued by NPO 2050.

Entered Kyodo News, a major news agency in Japan, in 1962, as a reporter. He has since held positions such as News Editor in Sendai and Tokyo Head Office, Senior Staff Writer and Editorial Writer. He covered three UN Population conferences in 1972m 1984 and 1994. He retired from Kyodo News in 1999.


Board Member (Auditor): Mr. Kazuo Tateishi

After graduating Tokyo University with a degree in law, Mr. Tateishi worked for the Japanese government's Auditor General. While working with the agency his responsibilities included legal consulting, public relations and account inspection. Mr. Tateishi also worked for UNICEF in New York and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization's in Rome. From Rome he returned to Asia and had a stint with the United Nation's Temporary Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC).
